I have no idea what is wrong, but here are some hints.

There isn't by any chance the word  "Synchronizing" showing down in the
lower left  by where it says "<map_name>@<host_name> [Read-Write]", is
there?
Are you on the native GUI or getting there by telnet or an X-emulator?  Try
the machine's native GUI if you can.

Just as a  test, try switching to another class of object.  Can you add one
of those?

Even if the shadow object  does not does not appear when you middle-button
click the type of object you want, drag it over to the map and drop it
anyway.   It might still appear.  The point is to see whether the dialog
box and object can be placed on the map  even when  the  shadow isn't
working, which could be an X-resource issue.


And when all else fails, log out and then back in or reboot.
