Map access on the Unix server? That is managed based on Unix groups and users, and the ovwperms command. It is most easily done using the gui, serversetup, where there is an option to manage map permissions. The permissions are applied to the map, and/or the map directory. The Unix admin makes sure the user is in the right group.

I usually do something like:
Root owns the map 'default'; the Netview admins are in a unix group nvadmin.
Set the permissions for the map to 664. This means root and the nvadmin guys can get the map 'default' r/w (first-come, first-served). Anyone else can only get it r/o. This means no one needs special permission to get this map r/o, they just need a Unix account.
Also run the command with the 'Global' option set. This controls who can create new maps.

Anybody else on these permissions? I think I have seen cases lately where you need x, like 775 instead of the 664 that I used for years.

Another way might be this:
Root owns the map 'roMap'. The operators are in a group called nvoper.
Set the permissions for the map to 640. This means that root can get it r/w, the guys in the nvoper group can get it r/o, and no one else can get it at all. Also run the command with the Global option. Otherwise those who open a r/o map can do a File..Save As.. and make their own r/w map.
