V714 puts up an x popup. I believe Eric is saying that he DOES have a proper x emulation session and is just asking if it is ok  to use it, not reporting a problem.

I don't believe the  X-windows based pop-up occurred during installs prior to 7.1.5.  So if you don't use the -q flag wit instalnv and you don't have a correctly exported X-session available, chances are the installation script could hang (don't know what this means for the validity of the underlying installation though). I'm betting that you're asking for trouble if you don't use the flag given that someone went to the trouble of adding it in 7.1.5 :-)

I'm not speaking from experience ... just adding my two cents.

It sounds to me like everyone is saying that it ought to work just fine. I've installed Netview (not 7.1.5 yet) using x emulation on my laptop to access a headless server. Everyone does this. I don't understand what the caveats are about.

By default the installation does require an exported X-Windows display (for the copyright message and OK dialog box). However a new install flag was added in 7.1.5 to suppress all pop-ups (thus making it a silent install from the perspective of X-window). Sounds like you just need to use this new flag, -q, when using the instalnv script.

Cheers,

Gareth

RE: [NV-L] 7.1.5 AIX remote upgrade

Mark,

Thanks for your response.  I'm doing this from a Windows XP machine, Hummingbird Exceed for the X-window protocol, telnet session, and running export DISPLAY for any gui data.  Our NOC runs Netview this way from a laptop and it has worked great for many years.  I'm concerned specifically with using this approach to do the upgrade.  Is there a portion of the upgrade that requires the gui display, or is there a problem running the installation files from any directory on the box rather than from the CD as per the installation guide procedure?

Thanks!

Eric,

I am making the assumption that the X-windows you are referring to is also on a Unix/Linux machine, and not a Windows box.  We do it all the time from a remote Unix/Linux desktop to the NetView server, using ssh or a telnet session.

Running 7.1.4 on AIX 5.3

Question:  Do you know if there is any problem running the instal remotely using an X-windows session?  and, My installation files are located on /var/tmp/nv715inst/

Thanks
