Thread-topic: [NV-L] OS SNMP Monitoring

Try a simple community (like public1) for testing.

I’ve had issues using characters in the string that don’t work well from cmd line (like $)

I recall a smart fellow from IBM finding a workaround for me proceeding the $ with a \ (ie if community is $pecial use \$pecial in cmd line)

One other thought to narrow down FWs ( all except S/W based ones running on the server itself) is use an snmp query tool directly on the server with the correct community – does it reply?)

Verify SNMP is running but doing a “net start | more” and seeing SNMP in the list

Last, did you setup any security restrictions (security TAB under SNMP service – Accept SNMP packets from these hosts?)

If so, are they IPs or names?  If latter, can they be resolved (try a ping NAME from cmd line)  You could temp change to accept from any and restart service as a test too.

You should also check to see if there are any firewalls blocking snmp..

Hi,

check either your community , or the snmp settings on the server (allow requests from). maybe even the snmp service is not running on your server

Hi,
I configured snmp agent in windows 2003, but i couldn't reach it from my netview server via snmpwalk.
I can able to ping the machine, but snmp request is timed out.

bash-2.05b# nmdemandpoll 10.16.45.24

18:41:37 ***** Starting demand poll of node aaa-wks-con-14*****
18:41:37     Interface 10.16.45.24(10.16.45.24) (currently up)
18:41:39   Interface 10.16.45.24( 10.16.45.24) is UP Responded to ping
18:41:39   Current polling parameters
18:41:39     scheduled configuration check at 06/15/07 12:05:13
18:41:39       auto-adjusted polling interval is 900 seconds
18:41:39   Get system identifier
18:41:45     SNMP request timed out (10.16.45.24)
18:41:45   Verify node name
18:41:45     node name verified to be aaa-wks-con-14.
18:41:45 ***** End of demand poll for node aaal-wks-con-14

what might be the problem?

Start with the Host Resources MIB - RFC 1514 (I think).  You should find
it is automatically loaded up into NetView.  Windows 2000 / 2003 SNMP
agents support the Host Resources MIB as standard - not sure about AIX 5.2.
Cheers,
Jane
