Andrew -
mgragentd normally produces a log file. It also has entries in snmpd.conf
and snmpd.peers. Normally it is mgragentd which is responsible for
indicating that NetView is active on a box. If mgragentd is not properly
installed then you may not see icons in the Manager collection on the map,
or they may appear red even when the daemons are running. You will also
have problem running the NetView client and in getting backup manger to
work.
Look at the man page for mgragentd. Your options for it are spelled out
there. You could also try just starting the daemon from the command line
(/usr/OV/bin/mgragentd) as root and see if error messages are produced.
This is a standard recommendation from the NetView Diagnosis manual.
However, it sounds to me as though you have a problem which is beyond the
simple advice of this listserver and you should call Support for more
personal attention.

James,
There is no log file for mgragentd in /usr/OV/log. /etc/snmpd.conf
has all the default values and snmpd is running fine. I can mibwalk on any
devices on the network. This is true in both cases where mgragentd is not
running as well as where it consumes cpu.
In the case where mgragentd is not running I don't seem to know it
is missing (i.e it has no noticeable effect on the system). I am not sure
at this stage why it is not running.
In the case where mgragentd is consumng cpu, stopping the deamon
bring
cpu usage back to normal and again no other ill effects is observed.
Both systems are running Digital Unix V4.0D.
Are there any tracing facility for mgragentd ?
If I am not using hot backup, what effect should be observed if
this
daemon is
not running ?
Regards,
Andrew

mgragentd should be running on all NetView Servers. If it is not running
at the other site, then either it died or they disabled it. mgragentd is
the daemon which makes the hot backup function possible. It registers with
snmpd as a smux peer and responds to SNMPGets from netmon. If you are
seeing hi CPU, then I would check to see if you have problems with snmpd or
with mgragentd connecting to snmpd (he will keep trying over and over again
if snmpd does not respond). He has a log you can look at
/usr/OV/log/mgragentd.log. If you have problems connecting to snmpd you
can always do an snmpd trace to see his side of it.

Subject: mgragentd consumming cpu cycles
Netview Server V5.0 , no clients or other manager stations.
What would cause mgragentd consuming 25-95% of cpu , most of the
time in the 90% region.
This is causing poor response on Netview User Interface.
Does this deamon runs all the time ? I checke on another system at
another site and it is not
running (this system is also a Netview Server).
