Peter Hadamovsky <phadamovsky@DEBIS.DE> on 08/10/98 03:37:29 AM Please respond to Discussion of IBM NetView and POLYCENTER Manager on NetView et alia <NV-L@UCSBVM.UCSB.EDU> To: NV-L@UCSBVM.UCSB.EDU cc: (bcc: Mark Sklenarik) Subject: netmon -S and duplicate IP addresses You are talking about two entirely different problems. 1. Secondary Addressing support - multiple IP addresses assigned to the same physical interface card. Support by NetView. 2. Duplicate IP Addresses - the same IP address assigned to more than one physical interface card. Not support by NetView. >Hi folks, > >I am a wee bit confused about some information gathered in the NetView >Red Books: > >Chapter 2.6.2 Discovery Agent says: > >-S Discover a secondary address for devices, such as routers or >gateways, that will support secondary addressing. > >is contrary to > >Chapter 7.7 Problem Determination > >Shared IP address >if netmon discovers two or more nodes with the same IP address then it >will begin to display and remove the icon. If this is the case it is >wise to switch on the -S option on netmon which will allow shared IP >addresses. The problem the book is trying to refer to is the fact that in some cases of router/device secondary addressing configurations, can cause NetView to add and delete the same device over and over again. Turning on secondary addressing support solves this problem. > >What does NetView, respectively support now, duplicate IP Addresses or >secondary addresses?? NetView ONLY supports secondary addressing. Thanks for any help in advance!
