You are talking about two entirely different problems.
1. Secondary Addressing support - multiple IP addresses assigned to the
same physical interface card.
Support by NetView.

2. Duplicate IP Addresses - the same IP address assigned to more than one
physical interface card.
Not support by NetView.

The problem the book is trying to refer to is the fact that in some cases
of router/device secondary addressing configurations, can cause NetView to
add and delete the same device over and over again. Turning on secondary
addressing support solves this problem.

NetView ONLY supports secondary addressing.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi folks,

I am a wee bit confused about some information gathered in the NetView Red Books:

Chapter 2.6.2 Discovery Agent says:

-S Discover a secondary address for devices, such as routers or gateways, that will support secondary addressing.

is contrary to

Chapter 7.7 Problem Determination

Shared IP address
if netmon discovers two or more nodes with  the same IP address then it will begin to display and remove the icon. If this is the case it is wise to switch on the -S option on netmon which will allow shared IP addresses.

What does NetView, respectively support now, duplicate IP Addresses or secondary addresses??

Thanks for any help in advance!
