Jane,

On your third question I have a suggestion.    Do you have a file called
/etc/netsvc.conf.    In that
file you should put string "hosts=local,bind".      It sound like you have
yourself already in /etc/hosts.

Your CDE is not starting up at first because it cannot resolve itself....as
 you guessed.      By having
this file it should resolve itself by /etc/hosts first...but for everything
 else use DNS.     Another question
that I would have is, do you have the "DNS in the network" as a secondary
DNS in your resolv.conf?
