Without device-specific management applications, you have the same sort of
power
that you have with any hub. You can load the private mib from the vendor,
or look in the
atm-forum mib, and hack around until you find the mib variables that tell
you things about
cells or whatever. I find that the biggest problem when working without an
ATM application
is the topology. Foreview and Nways draw the separate topology that tells
you how
your ATM devices are connected to each other, and lots and lots of other
stuff. But all of that
information probably comes from mib variables, so if you can find it, you
can monitor it.
Mibs for IBM atm devices are, I think, available on various web sites. Most
of this stuff is
pretty proprietary and not necessarily compliant to emerging standards, so
you are probably
better off adding an application if there is one available.

        Hi everybody.

What kind of things will Netview be able to tell me about an ATM
switch
WITHOUT the specific switch management software (Foreview on a ForeSystem
switch for example)?

It seems to me that those devices have an SNMP agent with basic
SNMP
information so netview should be able to put the device on the map
(OID_TO_TYPE etc. with the correct OID).

But I will need to use an specific management software to collect
information like cells received, cells transmited and rejected cells.

Can you confirm this for me?

Thank you for your attention and sorry for the newbie question.

        Regards,

        Carlos Lima Dias
