This is the same in V4 and in V5, so probably it is just a matter
of understanding how it works, hence your question.

Automatic layout can be turned off or on for each submap. Usually the
best arrangement is to turn it OFF for the IP Internet submap, and leave it
ON for lower level submaps. If you have cut and pasted your IP Internet
level submap into a number of Location icons, those submaps may also
be complex enough that you want to turn off automatic layout on them. But
do them individually, because to do it for ALL submaps means hundreds
of submaps (networks, segments, and nodes) that won't arrange themselves.

When automatic layout it OFF, new things are placed below the line in
the New Object Holding Area on each submap in which it belongs. If
you then DRAG them over the line and drop them, they will automatically
connect to anything they are supposed to connect to. You can then complete
the arrangement by dragging them to the spot you want them in.

Routers (things with more than one interface) and networks appear on the
IP Internet level, on the network level, and on the segment level of the map.
In the most common case, where automatic layout is OFF on the top (IP
Intenet) level and ON for the other submaps, you will see a new router or
network in the NOHA on the top level, waiting to be dragged, but already
correctly placed and connected in the appropriate Network and Segment
submaps.

Things like hubs and bridges (things with H or B by their entries in the
oid_to_type file) ONLY appear in the Network and Segment level submaps. So
when they area discovered, they will automatically be placed and connected
in the correct submaps. Unless, that is, you have turned OFF Automatic
Layout for ALL submaps. Not a really great idea, since now you have to
deal with the New Object Holding Area on lots and lots of submaps.

Now for the thing I suspect you might be talking about: You should only
really be cutting and pasting on the IP Internet level. New Location icons
you add here have the same properties as the IP Internet submap, and are
really just pinched-together parts of that submap. When a new router is
discovered, or a network, it will appear in the NOHA in the top level. If you
drag it across the line, it will connect to the Location icon to which it
belongs.
Then you have to decide if you want it inside there or not. If so, you cut it
(from
this submap) and paste it inside the location icon. As Rob has said, there is
no way to tell Netview to do this for you. You should NOT have to put it in
any OTHER submaps. It should already be in the Network and Segment levels.

A broad response, in hopes of covering your area of uncertainty...

Cordially,

I'm not familiar with version 4, but with v5, I've never seen this problem.
Any new Routers and IP subnets will remain on the IP Internet Map as they
are supposed to, but all other objects will be placed on the proper submap.

If you are expecting that Netview will also place routers and IP subnets
into locations you've created, it will not do that - you have to cut & paste
them where you want them. (Basically, the IP Internet IS the proper submap
for routers and subnets in Netview's "mind").

Automatic layout should have nothing to do with this. Netview should always
place the object on the proper submap regardless of the automatic layout
settings.

Subject: New Objects appearing on the Map...

Hello All.

In Netview V4.1, when a new object is added to the seedfile, the object
appears on the IP Internet Map (topmost layer of the IP Internet map). It
will not automatically be placed into it's correct submap, Instead I have to
dig down submap by submap and move it there manually.

Does Netview V5.1 solve this and what is the exact relationship between
automatic layout being turned off (so I can customize the map) and new
objects not being placed in their correct submap? I have found no
difference, has anyone else??

Any info appreciated.

Gord.
