The "select()" errors below (in both logs) could either a problem with the
device you're using for the modem or trying to use the TCP port 655. Check
your /etc/services file to see if there is another application registered to
use 655 (not that this is all conclusive). Also issue a netstat -an command
and look for something else "LISTENing" on the port.
