OK, Matt, I will bow to experience. We seldom have badoids in our networks here
because they are so vanilla and this is not what I saw (or rather it is not what
I remember from a year ago). But the NT product is rather different from the
UNIX product in this regard, so you undoubtedly right.

(2) From my experience with Netview/NT, if Netview "discovers" an OID that
is not in oid_to_type, then it will "put" in 1.3.6.1.3.1.1.98 or
1.3.6.1.3.1.1.99 (an snmpwalk displays the correct OID). To discover the
node with it's correct OID, vendor and agent:
        a. Edit the oid_to_type and oid_to_sym files
        b. Edit ovw_fields and snmp_fields (from \usr\ov\fields\c\) with the
correct vendors and agents (if necessary)
        c. Run ovw_fields.exe to register any new fields
        d. Delete the offending node(s) from all maps
        e. Rediscover node(s)

Regards,
 Matt Moore

Arjen -

Your problem descriptions confuse me greatly, because you are assuming some
things to be true which are not. I'll try to explain.

(1) The W function in oid_to_type does not exist is NetView 5.1. It is a
creation of 6.0 only. So how do you know about it?
Did you get an advanced look at it or something? In any case, 5.1.2 has no
knowledge of this option. You really do have 5.1.2 don't you? Click on
Help
and About in the NetView Console to make sure.

(2) NetView does not "put" an OID, he discovers it. It does not matter what
you
put in the tables if that is not the OID that the devices in question
respond
with. From your description of the problem it would appear to me that these
devices
responded with OID 1.3.6.1.3.1.1.98 instead of 1.3.6.1.4.1.429.2. But you
can
check that with snmpwalk. If that is the OID they give NetView back, then
that
is the OID you must modify in oid_to_type and oid_to_symbol, regardless of
what
you think it should be. Otherwise you must get a new agent for that box
that
responds with a different OID when queried.

(3) The web browser in NT is NOT designed for Netscape. It is designed for
Java and not all versions of IE or Netscape support that equally well. In
any
case, I have IE 4.0 at SP4 and I don't get any errors accessing the web
client.
What level do you have? What errors are you seeing?

To all.

We have installed Netview Ver 5.1.2 on NT Ver 4.0. We use the seed file to
limit the discovery of our nodes. During implementation, I ran into the
following problems.

* 3Com devices have a web based management functionality. If I enter
the 3Com devices, then Netview does not detect the web server functionality
although the OID has been entered in the OID_TO TYPE (I put the 'W'
identifier behind it) and OID_TO_SYMBOL files.
* For our remote users we are using RAS to support them. Although we
have entered the OID into both files (see above), Netview put all our RAS
servers into the BadOID smartset. Using the OVOBJPRINT utility I discovered
that Netview puts the OID 1.3.6.1.3.1.1.98 instead of 1.3.6.1.4.1.429.2.
* Within Dow we are using the IE4.0 Web browser. If I try to use any
functionality of the Netview server via IE4.0, I receive various messages
telling me that there was a script error. I understood that the web
interface of Netview V5.1.2 is based on Netscape, but is there a patch
available for Netview or IE4.0 to be able to work with the Web interface of
Netview ?

I hope that someone is able to help me with these issues. Any help is highly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
A. Hageman
