Assuming you are only trying to doll up the one type of device... Usually
it is
easier to go for all of them, as will become clear below.

1) check the entry in oid_to_sym on your system that has Ciscoview
installed. I'll
bet is says something other than Connector: Gateway for that OID, since
Connector:Gateway
is the netview default router symbol. Transfer that entry to the oid_to_sym
on the
new system manually, or see step 6 below.

2) In /usr/OV/symbols/C on the old system, find the file that contains the
<class>:<type> referenced in the oid_to_symbol file. Bring that file over
to the new system (but you might want to clean out all clauses except the
one
you are going to use, unless you plan to bring over all of the bitmaps as
well.).

3) Examine the <class>:<type> entry you just found and see which bitmap it
references
(presumably the one for the 7000). It will have a name. In
/usr/OV/bitmaps/C on the
old system, find ALL files that start with that name, not just the .p and
.m files.
There should be one with no dot at all. Bring all of those over to the new
system.

4) While you are at it, you ought to add an entry for the 7000 to
/usr/OV/fields/C/snmp_fields

5) To make these all known to netview, do ovw -config, ovw -verify. Look
for errors in the output.

6) If you have not manually updated the oid_to_sym and oid_to_type files,
you
can do it on the Tivoli context menu (or the smitty nv6000 one still works
for
this). It is under Configure. In oid_to_type, update the oid entry with the
vendor and agent. In the oid_to_sym, update the oid entry with the class
and type
of the symbol. All should be selectable from the lists.

7) Stop netmon, delete the nodes you want changed, wait for the delete
events to
show up, and ovtopofix -a.

8) Close maps, ovstop. Then ovstart. Bring up the map, rediscover the
nodes.
They should be added with the Cisco symbol, and also with the agent and
vendor
fields set.

Lots of steps. That's why vendor apps come with install scripts, and also
why you might want to migrate all of the symbols at once.

Cordially,

Hello All.

My env: Netview 5.1.1, AIX 4.2.1.

I am having a real problem transferring over the cisco bitmaps for my Cisco
7500 routers. I have another Netview box with Ciscoworks installed. Thus,
that box automatically has the symbols installed.

Here is what I have done to date:

1. I copied over all the 7500.*.m and 7500.*.p files into the
/usr/OV/bitmaps/C directory.

2. I examined the file: /usr/OV/conf/C/oid_to_sym.

The OID that is asscoiated with my Cisco 7500 sereis routers is:

1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.8

Here is the present line in the oid_to_sym file:

1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.8:Connector:Gateway # Cisco 7000

So, as just noted, I have copied over the files and made them all r--r--r--
1 bin bin

Does anyone know what I do next, or how I am suppose to edit the oid_to_sym
file ??? I have tried several things but NO LUCK whatsoever.

I also did a ovw -config, ovw -verify, ovw -fields.

After each attempt I highlighted the device and did a Demand Poll, no
change
in symbol.

If anyone has ever done this before, your help would be greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gord Michaels.
