Regarding #1, do you know what could be checked to improve the speed ?

Actually, the 'latency' is the same when I start the read-only GUI on the
server, so this is definitely not an XWindows or slow-network problem.

The read-only GUI itself reacts really quickly to every command, it's only
related to the topology status updates being so slow.

And the server is far from being overloaded, its performance is really good.
