Well, I'm still puzzled. The only way I can see you would get "End of MIB"
would be if we got to Jasper but it returned no data to our inquiry. If they
are AIX boxes, then perhaps you could turn snmpd tracing on and see the request
and response in the snmpd log on Jasper.
But NetView has no switch to use V1 or V2 in snmpwalk on any platform. So
perhaps the Cisco person was talking just about HP OpenView.

James,
/]@Jasper=>snmpwalk "ipaddress"
End of MIB.
The response is "End of MIB" when I do not specify a variable.
I will contact Cisco to see if they have a V1 version of this MIB. (By the way
the person at Cisco I spoke with, was using a solaris version of snmpwalk or
snmpget which allowed him to specify V2. He did refer to HP Openview, so I knew
I did not have the same as he did.) I was not sure if
my AIX version of snmpwalk would be linked to V1 only. But it turns out that it
is.
Thank you for your response.

I don't have any idea about your first problem with this device -- why you
cannot start with the default enterprise and move forward. Never seen that
before. Don't have a clue what to tell you to do about it. What exactly
happens when you try?
As for the second problem, your surmise is correct. snmpwalk is tied to the V1
mib loader libraries, /usr/OV/conf/snmpmib and snmpmib.conf. So that is why the
English-language target does not work -- it cannot be translated. I don't know
why any one at Cisco would have told you that it would be, unless they were
thinking that you would be loading a V1 version of their MIB. Do they supply
one? They usually do supply V1 versions of all their MIBs. If you can get
one, then your second
problem should be solved.

Subject: Re: snmpwalk versus mib browser
James,
Thankyou for your response. But I do not think I explained myself very well.
There seems to be two symptoms:
1) I am unable to snmpwalk this device for any information (even the standard
system variables) without specifically indicating the variable or table I would
like to get. I have never run into this before, I have always been able to walk
through all the mibs on a device without specifying a specific variable
ie. snmpwalk "ipaddress" system instead of just snmpwalk "ipaddress"
2) According to Cisco, I should be able to walk the local director mib by the
ciscoLocalDirectorMIB name once I have loaded the mib file. I am able to do
this through the gui mib browser interface, but not via the snmpwalk command
line. At the command line I need to enter the .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.99 MIB
identifier for the ciscoLocalDirectorMIB. The name does not work.
The mib file I loaded is called ld-mibv2.my and it updated the snmpv2mib,
snmpv2mib.bin files.
Does snmpwalk support snmpv2 devices?

I don't understand what you think is broken. If you read the man page for
snmpwalk, it says it starts at the default entry and does an SNMP Get Next
request until there is no more data. You have the option of specifying another
path other than the default one. When you do, it works as you expect, or sis I
misunderstand what you said? It is just that the MIB you want is not in the
default path, which is the one netmon uses for his config checks. Are you
surprised that netmon does not read Cisco proprietary stuff? He doesn't know
how to deal with that -- only things like the sys OID, the system variables, and
the interface tables. So he doesn't go down that path. But snmpwalk will, if
you tell him where to start.

Subject: snmpwalk versus mib browser
I loaded a cisco mib file for the local director product. I am able to query
this mib from the mib browser via the snmpv1/snmpv2 pull down. I cannot walk
this device with snmpwalk "ipaddress". I get "End of MIB". I can however, pull
the same local director info from the device using snmpwalk and the local
director MIB OID number ie snmpwalk "ipaddress" .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.99
I thought the snmpwalk command would use the mibs I loaded to allow me to query
the device from the command line without entering specific MIBs.
I believe the MIB I loaded is V2, could this be my problem? If so, how can I
query this device from the command line.
