In addition, I have encountered some customers who do not enable CDP
on their Ciscos. This would make it impossible for the new functionality
intended to assist with the discovery of unnumbered interfaces, although
the old way should still work fine if you have both routers in the
seedfile.
If CDP is enabled, you should be seeing nexthop info in the output of
demandpoll. Look there for problems with name resolution and other clues.

Subject: Re: [NV-L] IfSpeed/hasSerial fields and unnumbered interfaces
Hello Niko,
During my testing of the discovery of unnumbered serial interfaces for
NetView,
I compiled the following
list of requirements:
Requirements for the discovery of unnumbered serial interfaces:
1) Netmon must be running with the -u flag (default for V6.0)
2) SNMP configuration must include the proper community names to allow
NetView
to read the MIB on the routers on each end of the serial interface.
3) All components of the connection must be managed (routers, serial
interfaces,
and networks involved).
4) Name resolution must be configured to allow netmon to resolve all names
to ip
addresses*.
5) If all components are not found during initial discovery, it may be
necessary
to demandpoll each router to allow netmon to analyze the information and
provide
ipmap with the information necessary to display the connection correctly**.

Subject: [NV-L] IfSpeed/hasSerial fields and unnumbered interfaces
My customer has the following enviroment: AIX 4.3.3, NetView 6.0 and
Cisco Routers mod. 7500 IOS 11.2. The routers have interfaces of the type:
fddi, atm, ethernet and serial. IP addresses are defined only to the
ethernet interface. The router network is discovered through a seed file
that contain just the routers IP addresses, there is not a DNS.
He is testing the new features in NetView 6.0 and noticed:
the new fields IfSpeed and hasSerial are not in the object information
of the router Cisco.
it seems that there is not support (as suppose to be) for the unnumbered
interfaces, indeed are discovered just the ethenet interfaces of the
router. (netmon has the flag -u) . In Tools--->Display Object
Information you can verify that is reported only the information
regarding the ethernet interfaces. Using the MIB Browser you can read
the IfDescr, Iftype, IfAdminStatus and IfOperStatus and understand
that NetView is missing something in the discovery phase.
Has anyone ecountered the same problems before ?. Any idea ?.
Thanks.
