The network devices that you want to have sending their traps to NetView
each have to be configured for one or more "trap recipients", i.e., the
address(es) where they send their traps. Traps are sent/pushed, not
pulled or requested. They're not an snmpgets, they are unrequested.
Typically it's done by defining a "trap community', and listing a
specific ip address at the router, switch, etc. Reality is, the sending
of the udp traps doesn't involve a community name, but almost every
device I've ever seen uses the community table to set it up.

About automating, it can certainly be done, for example if you are using
Cisco2000 for cisco devices, you can schedule configuration updates with
that, and add the trap community and address in your template. Other
vendors have their own solutions.

But it's done at the network device, not at NetView. In fact, the trap
is set up in /usr/OV/conf/C/trapd.conf, and NetView doesn't even have to
have a valid community name for the network device. If the trap arrives,
he'll format it, and perform whatever action you may have configured.

If the traps for a device are not in trapd.conf, you get all those nasty
(No Known Format) messages.

Hope that helps.
