It shouldn't be that much of a battle.

Even though I do not believe that there is a migration path from Version 4
to 6 directly, without having gone through V5 , and I know there will not
be one to Version 7, you should be able to preserve your MIBs and trap
definitions, even if you don't migrate. Just make copies of them some
where. Put the MIBs in your new NetView's /usr/OV/snmp_mib directory. Any
MIB you loaded with V4 will load fine on a later version. The traps are a
bit harder, because the format of trapd.conf has changed, but it may be as
simple as running nvaddtrapdconf to merge the two. I don't know exactly
because I haven't done it, but if you call Support when you are ready to
try I am sure you can get some help.

      devices

As an addendum to my previous reply.

We use Netview to monitor status and collect statistics on our 3Com
equipment
(3 @ Corebuilder 3500s, 3 @ 2500s, about 150 1100/3300s in 60 locations and
120
or so Superstack 10 devices in another 40 locations). Since we had a
previous
installation of Transcend for AIX, the mibs are loaded in Netview and we
use
the Netview (4.x for AIX) as the trap destination. We use Transcend Network
Control Services for NT to manage configuration (thresholds, alarms) on the
devices.

The AIX integration allowed us to do all from one box (just double click on
an
icon and Device Manager came up), but the RS6000 is much happier not having
to
run Transcend.
