Well, by your own analysis you have isolated the problem to DNS. So it
seems to me that despite what you say about it working fine, you have just
proved that it is not. In the case of traps and events it is reverse
hostname resolution, that is, IP Address to hostname resolution, that is
important. And nvevents will have to resolve the hostname just as trapd
does, so as soon as you start the GUI, you double the number of name
resolution requests. I suspect that something may also be wrong with what
your DNS does when it cannot resolve an address. I have seen some people
send the thing off to a world-wide web name server and that take several
minutes to time out. Not good.
If you search the archives, you will find a lot of advice about name
resolution issues. One recurring one is to set RES_RETRY and RES_TIMEOUT
to 1 in /etc/environment. I think you may also be able to export these in
the aixterm you use to start the GUI if the problem is isolated to nvevents
(I'll bet it is not but that's just the one you can see), but I have not
tried that..
And these Log Only events are generated every time you use the event
command:
netmon related application disconnecting from trapd
netmon related application connected from trapd
so there is nothing unusual about them but you will not see them in the
events window unless you reconfigure them in trapd.conf.

Subject: [NV-L] dns and netview events
Dear all,
I'm using NetView for AIX V6.01. My NetView box is configured to use
the DNS server
which is on the same 100bit Ethernet as NetView box. The DNS name
resoluiton works
fine and I've also configured the /etc/netsvc.conf file to have name
resolution go to
/etc/hosts first. Entries in /etc/hosts file are consistent with the
ones in DNS.
When I start NetView, however, events are not poping up in the event
window, while
they are showing up in trapd.log. When I configure the server not to
use DNS,
then the events start to show up.
I've tried reset_ci in case there are resolution problems, I've also
tried nettl to parse
the nettl.LOG00, still haven't found anything related.
When NetView box is configured to use DNS, I tried to use the event
command to generate
event. The event shown up in the trapd.log file, as well as two other
events:
netmon related application disconnecting from trapd
netmon related application connected from trapd
Any idea what could possibly be wrong with my box? Thanks.
Best Regards,
Geoffrey Cheng
