Can you change it back once the daemon is started?

Yep, it is an compaq problem.
The symbol status source gets changed from "compound" to "symbol".
I already adressed this problem to compaq support but I didn't get
any feedback up to now. Perhaps some more bug reports will remind
them on the number of users...
