Assuming you are on Unix...
If these are ports for which no interface card is drawn, then
you can monitor them with snmpgets of ifOperStatus. To do
this graphically, you could use the Agent Policy Manager
function. This is rather complicated to set up. There is an
example in the redbook SG24-4515-00 Examples Using
Netview for AIX V4, which is when the function was introduced.
It uses the Mid-Level Manager (on the same box is ok) and
the APM function (under Tools) is used to define what MIB
variable you want to monitor on a node. This will add an icon to
the node submap representing the status of your chosen threshold
for that MIB variable. In your case, if you wanted to depict the up/down
status of a port, you would monitor the ifOperStatus value of the instance
in the interface table that represents that port. Traps are also sent
when the change takes place.
You will need to study the redbook mentioned above, as
well as the chapters on the APM in the V6 Administrator's
Guide, and the information on installing the MLM in the
V6 Inst & Config manual (which refers you to other places)
and then there is the MLM manual for the subtle parts. Once
it is set up, it generally works well. At least it worked well until
V6.0.2, at which point there seem to be some odd problems
cropping up with MLM. Support has been helpful in tracking them
down, so plan on calling and asking for e-fixes for MLM. There are
not a lot of customers using this function, I believe, mostly due to
the complexity of the setup, but the experts are all subscribers to
this list.
Cordially,

NetView Discussion
Hi,
We need to monitor individual serial ports on one of our routers.
How in Tovoli would you add the Serial ports for a Router Sub-map view, and
how would you link these to the Routers actual ports. We already have to
MIB's loaded and can query the ports, in the Submap brower.
Thanks,
Matt Spragg
