NetView for UNIX is NetView for UNIX. The Solaris version has all the same
features as the AIX version.
Uusually I tell people to stay away from Solaris if they have not had much
experience with it already, as it is much harder to administer than AIX.
There is nothing like SMIT which gives you menus to do all the important
system configuration tasks. But from what you say that should not be an
issue for you. That only leaves one important thing to consider, SNMP
support. This list is full of people complaining about Sun's SNMP support
and about weird problems with acl's and with the daemon which just stops
working for no apparent reason and has to be restarted. I see that as
another good reason not to choose Sun as a platform if you don't have to,
but that's your decision. This is a matter of trade-offs with no clear-cut
answer for all cases. What hardware? Well, as always that depends on the
size of your network. Our performance people routine recommend the AIX
F50/F80 series which has 4 porcessors as the best platform for AIX. We
don't have an official Sun recommendation, but four processors is better
than two, which is better than one. When it comes to computers, the advice
is always the same "You can't have too much cpu or too much memory". As
they used to say in Hollywood, "you can't be too rich or too thin."

Subject: [NV-L] Solaris Netview
Netview 6.0.2 rs6000 - 43P - 240 aix 4.2.1
We are in the process of upgrading our Netview Servers and we have the
dilemma whether to move from aix to the solaris version. We already looked
at the NT version and it would be too much of a change, and also somewhat a
"downgrade" to the aix version, so we declined that possibility. Aix is a
little of a hard sell in this shop as most of our servers are running
Solaris, NT or Open Systems (Linux, openBSD and others)
Couple of questions:
-Are there any big differences between aix and solaris netview? Are all
Netview "goodies" present on solaris?
-Can the databases be moved from one platform to the other? If so, is it
feasible to have 2 servers of different platforms, one as a primary and the
other as a backup?
-What is the prefer type of server to run Netview on Solaris? And what
would be the prefer type of server for the aix version?
Thanks for any information.
