This is a multipart message in MIME format. Well, it's official. See IBM Announcement Letter 201-298 for details. NetView 7.1 will be generally available October 26, 2001. Note: Shipments will begin after the planned availability date. New Features? The big news is in the web client for 7.1, which is identical for UNIX or NT. (1) It is no longer necessary to have a read-write map open on the server to use the web client. Instead there is a background daemon which the web client will connect to instead. This means, among other things, that you can setup an NetView server, and after initial customization, run it without an active X-GUI. (2) There is a completely new security interface for the web client, which allows you to define roles (Operator, Administrator, User, etc) for the web users, and in addition, scoping -- you can restrict what the they can see and interact with via subnet address. (3) There is also a completely new SNMP V1/V2 MIB Browser (and loader) for use with the web client, which can also be launched independently on the server. (4) There is an expanded events display which allows filtering by rulesets in the web client. (5) Cross-firewall support for the web client. Only one port is needed and it is unidirectional. Other new features (6) Hot backup - the ability to pause your NetView daemons long enough to make a backup of the databases and then resume them again. A complete shutdown is no longer required to make backups. It is much faster. (7) Standalone install -- if you have no need of the Framework, then you can install NetView 7.1 standalone, without it, on UNIX. (8) Other miscellaneous enhancements. Tivoli NetView 7.1 provides some support for (Cisco) MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) devices, some improved layer-2 diagnostics for certain LAN devices, and discovery and monitoring improvements for ISDN. (9) New Statement of Direction (LINUX) Present plans include adding Linux platform support for Tivoli NetView 7.1, initial delivery planned for Intel-based platforms. (RedHat 7.1 & SuSE 7.1) These are not available now but will probably appear some time next year. Additional Information: Sorry but the Release Notes (hardcopy GI11-0879) are not available on-line at this time. Tivoli NetView 7.1 runs on the following software platforms: * Windows NT® V4 with Service Pack 5, or later (Workstation or Server) * Windows® 2000 Service Pack 1 (Professional or Server) * AIX® 4.3.3 Maintenance Level (4330-08) * Solaris 2.7 (All Sun-recommended patches) * Solaris 2.8 (All Sun-recommended patches) * Tivoli Management Framework 3.6.3, or later (required only if installing through the Management Framework or if planning to use RIM database support) See the Tivoli NetView 7.1 release notes or contact your marketing representatives for additional details on the supported software platforms. Current licensees of Tivoli NetView with support in effect will receive instructions on how to order this update. You can also contact your local IBM Business Partner or IBM representative. To identify them, call 800-IBM-4YOU. Note: Also in that letter is an important piece of news for all NetView Version 6.0 users: Based on the Tivoli end of support policy, Tivoli support for Tivoli NetView 6.0 will be discontinued 12 months after the planned availability of Tivoli NetView 7.1.
