I just realized that you said you were on NT.
That's a rather different ball game than the UNIX product which is what I was talking about in my responses.
I should have made that clear.   My apologies

You will see different behavior on NT.  The NT version of NetView was derived from the UNIX one, and not all of the function and features of UNIX were ported.  You can have different maps on NT, but  manage/unmanage is a global condition.   And the object database no longer reflects how many maps you have.  The OVW Maps Exist count does not change.  But if you unmanage/manage an object, the OVW Maps Managed count does decrement/increment.  I don't know why these things are different in NT(as I said, I don't work in that area) and I can see that in NT, it would appear that manage/unmanage is applies to objects, and not to maps, so I understand why you would be puzzled,  but I am still not aware of any method to set that condition from the command line or from a ruleset.   If you have something you would like to try, I am sure that others on the list would be interested in your results.

I am not sure what you are asking.

You can do an ovobjprint and for any object on a map you will see two
fields, OV Maps Exist and OV Maps Managed.
I don't know where in the map database this information is stored (I don't
work in that area) but these counts are what you will see change when you
have multiple maps and the object is managed in one and not the other.

Unlike being managed/unmanaged, IP status is an object property, and when a
previously unmanaged object is managed via the GUI, a trap is sent to
netmon, which immediately polls the object and sets its status in the
topology and object database.  If the object is managed in one map and not
the other, then IP status will not change to "unmanaged"  but will remain
what netmon sets it to.   It will show up as the "wheat" unmanaged color in
the map where it is unmanaged, however.  When there is only one map, the
object's IP status changes to "unmanaged" when it is.  I suppose they could
have used some other value here (undetermined?) but they did not.

Don't believe me?  Try it and see.

Could you enlighten me a little more as this interests me.  Netview 7.1 on
W2K SP2 (although I don't think this matters here).

We have Netview set up to discover the local subnet only.  When it does
this it finds routers that it sets to unmanaged.  According to me this is
the IP Status field (field ID 74) in the database which has nothing to do
with which map the device is displayed on.  If I select the router on the
GUI and manage it, this database field goes to 'normal' or 'unknown' or
'marginal'.  If I unmanage it again it goes back to 'unmanaged'.

If this managed status is per map, where is it stored?  Admittedly, I don't
have multiple maps yet as I am still trying to get to grips with the basic
stuff so perhaps I haven't discovered something yet that I need to.

But there is not.  This usually gets asked as "How can I do this from the
command line?"  In the current design, you cannot.
Managed/Unmanaged is relative to a map, not to an object.  You can have
multiple maps and the object can be managed on some and unmanaged on
others.  So the only  way you can manage or unmanage an object is to have
the map open read-write.  Which means you have to do it from the GUI.

Of course, if you always want to have your HP printers discovered
unmanaged, and they all have SNMP turned on, and they all have a unique
OID, then you could modify the /usr/OV/conf/oid_to_type file to make that
happen.  Read the comments and create an entry like this
<HP PRINTER OID>:  :  :U
But this only works with ones you have not yet discovered of course, and
they must have SNMP active at the time of discovery.

NetView 6.0.2 AIX 4.3.3
Is there a way to unmanage nodes that match a smartset? Example:
I have HP Print Servers that I do not want to manage at this time but I
need to see that they exist.
I set up a smartset based on the object OID. I have been manually
unmanaging them, but there has to be a better way.
