That's great, thanks Gareth.
However I have a few questions:
- The purpose of netviewd is to have a map open at all time in order for
the discovery process to continue. Now if netviewd is running a RO map,
will Netview still be able to continue discovering the network and add new
objects in the database ?
- The fact that the webconsole are opening the map that netviewd run and
netviewd is running a RO map, does it affect some of the features available
on the web console ? (such as manage/unmanage)
Thanks,

Try configuring the netviewd daemon to start a read-only map instead of the
read-write map. This will mean all WebConsoles will be connecting to a
read-only map which should be fine. Then you will be free to issue the
"netview" command without the -dconsole option to launch a X-Windows
read-write map. Your WebConsole users will be unaffected by the launching
or closing of the X-Windows read-write map.
To have netviewd run a Read Only copy of the map, add the -ro parameter. In
the /usr/OV/lrf/netviewd.lrf
file, change the line
OVs_YES_START:nvsecd pmd ovwdb trapd ovtopmd ovactiond nvcorrd actionsvr
nvserverd:-spmd
2:OVs_WELL_BEHAVED:30:
(That is actually all one line in the file.)
Add ", -ro" after the "-spmd 2" so that the line looks like:
OVs_YES_START:nvsecd pmd ovwdb trapd ovtopmd ovactiond nvcorrd actionsvr
nvserverd:-spmd 2,
-ro:OVs_WELL_BEHAVED:30:
Issue these two commands:
/usr/OV/bin/ovdelobj netviewd.lrf
/usr/OV/bin/ovaddobj netviewd.lrf
The netviewd daemon will have to be recycled to pickup the change (this will
disconnect any WebConsoles
that are currently in use, so do this during an off-peak time):
/usr/OV/bin/ovstop netviewd
/usr/OV/bin/ovstart netviewd

Subject: [nv-l] why do you need

Hello,
AIX 4.3.3, Netview 7.1.2
I noticed that it is necessary to be root in order to start the Netview
XWindows GUI by typing "netview - dconsole" when netviewd is used.
I guess it has to do with the need to tell netviewd to release the GUI.
Is there a way to allow a user (other than root) to do that ?
I have root access for the configuration of Netview. However the person
maintaining the map doesn't have root access right now (using Netview
6.0.3) and I was wondering how he will be able to start Netview with
version 7.
Also, why does netviewd have to close every Java console each time we start
or stop the XWindows GUI ?
Until now it was a pain to have the operator close Netview to release the
Read Write map and restart with the Read Only to allow us to make change in
the map. I was hoping that Netview 7 would solve that ....... now I see
that opening the RW map for change still stop all the operators in their
work as it close the Java consoles ....
any comment ?
