So do I understand that one of the reasons to back up the database is to hang
on to the unmanaged status? I guess that makes some sense.

Your process is not wrong, if that is what is right for you. If you have
automated your management (NetView opens trouble tickets automatically)
then there is less reliance on maps that are green. If you manage via
maps, then you want acknowledgements, manage/unmanage actions to migrate to
your backup on a regular basis.
If you don't have the requirement to administer one map, then your way is
perfectly ok. The right process is driven by your requirements, not what
the product can/cannot do.
