No, it does not matter where the display is running. If both users are
using the same NetView then there is only one machine with databases,
though there can be several maps. But if they are using the same map, and
I presume they are, then only one of them can have the map open
Read_Write, the other user will have it Read-Only (or they both may have
it Read_Only it they started NetView that way deliberately). I'll wager
that status always looks good on the read-writ map. How can you tell?
Look in the lower left-hand corner of the map box. It will say
"mapname@hostname Read_Write" or "mapname@hostname Read_Only". Note
that the usual map name is "default".
Generally speaking status color changes -- and only status color changes
-- will be propagated from one map to another by ovw. Since you tell me
this is some custom application I am not certain what might be wrong. But
I wonder if you could clear it up by having the user of the read-only map
just do a Refresh of it, rather than stopping and restarting everything.
Next time it happens, just have him click File-->Refresh Map on his map.
His GUI will close and then reopen automatically, and it may just be
updated with the correct status at that point. Have him try it and see.
Of course, why exactly it isn't propagating on its own I cannot say,
without knowing more about the app itself, and how the status is kept
updated in the first place. Even then I am not sure I could say, since
NetView 5.1 is a long way out of support.

Here's the scenario (forgive me if this is vague):
We have User A running netview on our netview host. We have User B on
another box and running netview on the netview host via ssh session. So,
in effect, there are 2 netview sessions running on the netview host, one
displayed on the netview host, and one displayed on the other box.
The problem we see is that User A shows green on a status icon while at
the
same time User B is showing red on the same status icon. The icon is
something for which we have customized polling daemons installed. I know
this info is pretty general, but my question is:
- does each individual netview user have its own topology database
(maybe one is being updated and the other is not?)?
- are there permission restrictions on a user's map (maybe User B
can't write to it?)?
The answers may explain why we are seeing different status on the same
icons for 2 different users.
We have noticed that ending all netview sessions, performing
ovstop/ovstart, and restarting the netview sessions usually straightens
everything out.
One other strange thing is that we installed a 2nd netview host. The
topology database on the 1st netview host was copied onto the 2nd netview
host. We never see the same problem with the 2nd netview host.
