There has been an enhancement request submitted to identify when an SNMP agent
is down - this is in response to a situation with Sun (go figure) SEA agent.
Basically what would happen is we would do discovery in a subnet with solaris
boxes and after discovery they would either turn red or never identify
themselves as Sun boxes. We had the seed files entries coded with "$" so SNMP
management was required. Well we hit the box with community strings until the
one we wanted worked and by that time, the SEA agent had shut down - you
guessed it - the MIBIISA sub agent. Now that the MIB II agent is down - I can't
get the interface table or the system mib and therefore the box is SNMP managed
- but not really.
I turned this in to support and was told an enhancement request would be
submitted because it was "working as designed" even if the design did not
account for the sub agents failing and there will be no event generated. Mind
you, these boxes reply positively to SNMP queries so NVSNIFFER won't help
anyway. They just report "end of mib" or "no mib objects contained in subtree".
Hope that helps.
