Hi James,
As suggested by you I have tried installing the NV 713 on Solaris with
the
/usr/OV.backv7r1 directory in place. But to my bad luck or my ignorance
I am finding out that it throws an error immediately when I try to start
installation through desktop.
It says:
An attempt has been made to install Tivoli Net view server when a backup
directory is present. Either we do an upgrade install or rename the
backup directory and do a fresh installation.
Now the problem is that if I do a rename of the backup, then I guess it
will be a fresh upgrade. So I wanted to know what does or how do we do
this upgrade install. I did not find anything specific like this in the
redbooks or the user manuals.
Can you suggest what the best way can be? Do I do a fresh install or
what can be the best practice. Also how do I search the archives of this
posting, as I may not be having all the archives.
Regards,
Mithun Prabhu

Well, it's been awhile since I did this, and the details are fuzzy. I
don't normally do installs but I have seen this work
I believe that if you just install using the Framework and the
/usr/OV.backv7r1 directory is in place, then it will be found and
merged.
Why not try that?
If it installs NetView afresh and ignores the usr/OV.backv7r1 directory,
then try it a second time. It may be that the Framework requires
NetView
to be installed once before it gives you the upgrade option. I am not
certain about that.

Subject: RE: [nv-l] NV 713 : Server Migration... Help

the same.
Hello James,
Thanks for the steps, I have a small problem here. Yes as u have said I
have already prepared the new server as a MN of the TMR but with a
different IP address and new hostname, which are different from the
current Netview server. Now all the Tivoli components and patches are
installed on the same. Even NV Fwk patch has been installed. I have used
the same procedure to backup the existing /usr/OV.back.v7r1 and tarred
it and ftped it to the new server. I have also untarred the same into
/usr directory of the new server. So I have /usr/OV.back.v7r1 in the new
server.
Now how do I give the NV 713 server ( Solaris version) when I install
how do I mention the upgrade path. I mean we normally take it from the
Tivoli desktop and goto install -> products and say Tivli NV server
install 713 from the CDrom right. There it doesnot give any upgrade
option, or is it that it auto senses the /usr directory and the existing
/usr/OV.back.v7r1 and does all on its own? Or is it that I will have to
run the install from CLI with some upgrade switch. Am not sure of the
same, can you please help me in same?? Please help me in this so that I
can complete off the same and have a testing done.
TIA.

I think if you search the archives you will find a lot of posts on this
subject.
If what you want to do is clone your server, you must first backup all
the
user data on it. It's easy to do with serversetup "Maintain --> Backup
Selective Data"
This creates an entire directory structure, /usr/OV.back.v7r1, with all
your user customization in it. This you tar up and compress in
preparation for ftp'ing it to you new box.
On the new box you install the everything you need except NetView itself
-- the Framework if you are going that route and all the OS maintenance
that you would need for a successful NetView install. Then ftp over and
untar that /usr/OV.back.v7r1 directory structure. Now when you install
NetView specify that you want to use the upgrade path. The installation
scripts will find the data in /usr/OV.back.v7r1 and merge it in with the
new stuff creating a clone of the original box. All your customization
will be preserved. There is no need to use pax in this procedure
because
you are restoring the entire directory. pax is only recommend when you
already have done this and now you want to keep the two NetViews in
synch
by moving the databases from one to the other. Since the databases have
a
sparse directory structure which tar doesn't understand but pax does, it
can save you from requiring more space on the restore than you did on
the
original box.
Lot's of folks have used this clone procedure before so I am surprised
that none of them have responded.
It's very straightforward because it is essentially the same procedure
you
would use to migrate an old NetView to a new version. The only
difference
is that you move the backup directory to a new box instead of an old
one.

Subject: [nv-l] NV 713 : Server Migration... Help
required in steps involved the

Hello list,
We have a NV 713 existing and running perfectly on a low end SUN server.
All is working fine as far as functionality is concerned. We have got a
new high end SUN server which is configuration wise double the speed and
HDD capacity as the old one is. So we need to migrate the complete
working
NV 713 server on to the new server. What is the best practice to do the
same. Is it that we need to backup the NV DB , use tar and then untar it
on to the new server with NV and patches installed( ofcourse with TMF
and
MN components on the same) I would like to know the best procedure to do
the same. Somewhere I read the tar/pax method is the best, but amnot
sure
about the steps involved. So if someone will be able to share their
migration experrinces and documents if possible..
TIA.
