Yes and No. trapgend should still work if he gets notified, but that
seems to be the problem.

It seems AIX has put some new (and rather arbitrary) restrictions on the
kinds of events which can be alertable.

(1) Those with a CLASS of O (operator message) are no longer alertable,
Only those with a CLASS of H (hardware), S (software), or U
(undetermined). So you cannot alert on the OPMSG (errlogger command) any
more, nor on things like DMPCHK_NOSPACE (not enough room on the disk to
take a core dump).
(2) You also cannot alert on records where "User Causes" are not in the
range of "0000 - dfff" or "f000 or fffe". Since many useful records,
the most notable one being CORE_DUMP, have User Causes in the range of
"e000-efff", this makes the function much less attractive.
(3) You can, I believe, change all this, but it doesn't appear to be very
easy. You cannot change the just the CLASS of an existing record with
errupdate, or modify the User Causes. Instead you would have to delete the
entire template record and replace it with a new one (so you had better be
sure you know what you are doing). The errinstall command would let you
modify the User Causes -- see the man page on that -- but it is hard to
see what they should be.

My view here is that AIX has made the error notify facility almost
worthless with these restrictions. I mean, if you can't get notified when
a core dump occurs, that's just silly, in my opinion. But as an internal
party, I have no one to complain to who will listen. If I were you, and
you valued this facility in earlier releases, I'd open a problem to AIX
and raise the devil. Tell them how irritated you are that your old stuff
doesn't work any more. Demand an explanation of why they did this. And
insist that they change it or give you an easy way to change it back. The
least they could do is give you some samples or personal help to modify
the templates so you can continue to do what you have always done.

For the life of me, I see no good reason for these new restrictions, when
the old way worked fine all the way back before AIX 3.2.5. I first tested
this facility almost ten years ago, using AIX V3.2 and NetView Version
3..1

Anyone know if errpt and NetView's trapgend still work the same with
AIX 5.1 / 5.2?
Cheers,
Jane
