I don't see anything appended but the answers to your questions are simple. The node field is determined by NetView using standard name resolution facilities. If you have DNS set up he will use that. Otherwise /etc/hosts, or whatever the gethostbyaddr function on your NetView box returns. NetView lets the operating system tell him what the name is. The source character for an event is user configurable. If you see a "'?" then it hasn't been configured. You can use xnmtrap (UNIX) or Trap Settings (Windows) to modify your trapd.conf settings for that trap and make it more meaningful. The usual choice is "A" for the remote SNMP agent on the target box. James Shanks Level 3 Support for Tivoli NetView for UNIX and Windows Tivoli Software / IBM Software Group
Below is what I'm receiving in the trapd.log when I (purposefully for testing) stop and restart the SNMP service on my WIN2K laptop so that it generates a cold start trap. Does anybody know what populates the "Node" field....here it has TIVOLILAB....but to my knowledge I haven't specified that anywhere within that laptop. SECONDLY..and more importantly what does the question mark mean? I haven't yet gained a knowledge of how to interpret the ?, N, etc. What is what in this column? Thanks as always !
