Cool
thanks James !! I also see lowercase n's, lowercase d's, capital i's,
etc.....I just want to understand what these all mean so that I can better
understand exactly what is going on. Is any of this documented
anywhere? I apologize for such lame questions, but I am still very much
working on "putting all of this together" and understanding NetView's
funtioning. I also really need some help in understanding MIB's, Traps,
etc.....I see all kinds of e-mails, etc. regarding "load this MIB", configure
this TRAP....I just don't understand how it all ties together and desperately
need some help as I feel I'm "wandering around in the dark" vs. actually
producing something with NetView. Please help...I know the main desire of
this list is to help with specific technical issues, but I again, desperately,
need some help with the theoretical functioning of the basics.
Unfortunately, we're not in a position that I can successfully persuade
management to invest in Netview training.
I don't see
anything appended but the answers to your questions are simple.
The node field is determined by NetView
using standard name resolution facilities. If you have DNS set up he
will use that. Otherwise /etc/hosts, or whatever the gethostbyaddr
function on your NetView box returns. NetView lets the operating system
tell him what the name is.
The
source character for an event is user configurable. If you see a "'?"
then it hasn't been configured. You can use xnmtrap (UNIX) or Trap
Settings (Windows) to modify your trapd.conf settings for that trap and make
it more meaningful. The usual choice is "A" for the remote SNMP agent on
the target box.

trapd.log question
|
Below is what I'm receiving in the trapd.log when I
(purposefully for testing) stop and restart the SNMP service on my WIN2K
laptop so that it generates a cold start trap. Does anybody know what
populates the "Node" field....here it has TIVOLILAB....but to my knowledge I
haven't specified that anywhere within that laptop. SECONDLY..and more
importantly what does the question mark mean? I haven't yet gained a
knowledge of how to interpret the ?, N, etc. What is what in this
column? Thanks as always ! Brian
