The scp copy won't have damaged the files. I suspect that what you used to untar on the NT box went wrong.
The usual mistake is to use Winzip without unchecking the tar autoformat option first.  Was it Winzip?

I had to remove control-M's from all text files on the server, since they got transferred in binary with scp from the Windows NT >machine.
