Yes, it is a security feature that was added. Not sure about Windows 2000 but
in AIX you have to set the
"AdditionalLegalTrapCharacters" environment variable in the netnmrc.pre file
and export it. Search the archives on that variable, you'll find several
references.

NetView 7.1.4 Fixpack 1 on Windows 2000 Professional
All special symbols (including ".") that are taken from string fields from
SNMP traps are automatically prefixed with "\" symbol. When I use it
display or log some information containing i.e. IP address it makes it
almost unreadable. I remember that this workaround is related with security
issue (ability to run malicious code on NetView machine just by sending
well crafted SNMP trap), but I can't remeber how to control that. I would
like to simply get rid of these "\". Anyone remebers how to do it?
