Actually, it's not end of the story. In fact the "." and "-" are legal by
default and by default prefixed with "\". Other characters that are not
legal (and not defined in AdditionalLegalTrapCharacters) are replaced with
"_". In firts case if we want to avoid this "\" symbol we need to defne
another registry string value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE —> SOFTWARE —> Tivoli —> NetView —> Current Version ->
QuoteCharacterForLegalTrapCharacters

and leave it empty (or change to symbol of our choice).

Explained in Tivoli NetView User’s Guide Version 7 Release 1. 4 page 72.

Yes, I found it. In Windows version you must create following registry key
(string):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE —> SOFTWARE —> Tivoli —> NetView —> Current Version ->
AdditionalLegalTrapCharacters

Valid symbols in that key are: "! @ # \$ % ^ & * ( ) _ + | ~ \` \\ = - ] [
\’ ; /. , ? > < \ : } {"

Thanks for the hint Bob!

             Please respond to

Yes, it is a security feature that was added. Not sure about Windows 2000
but in AIX you have to set the
 "AdditionalLegalTrapCharacters" environment variable in the netnmrc.pre
file and export it. Search the archives on that variable, you'll find
several references.

Subject: [nv-l] The "\" symbol in traps fields

NetView 7.1.4 Fixpack 1 on Windows 2000 Professional

All special symbols (including ".") that are taken from string fields from
SNMP traps are automatically prefixed with "\" symbol. When I use it
display or log some information containing i.e. IP address it makes it
almost unreadable. I remember that this workaround is related with security
issue (ability to run malicious code on NetView machine just by sending
well crafted SNMP trap), but I can't remeber how to control that. I would
like to simply get rid of these "\". Anyone remebers how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

Bartlomiej Grenda
