Thanks Fredo - should have mentioned that I had thoroughly checked out
DNS. It seems it was to do with half removed entries for the 2 switches...

sounds like a misconfigured dns
put the domain names into /etc/hosts (with a trailing '.')
and see if discovery works correctly.
you might also like to "dig skills-1st.co.uk. axfr |grep switch"
and look for any double dots.
