Before we continue, I am not sure that there is anything I can tell you on this list that would help, and I suggest that you open a problem to Support, though you may very well have to go to FixPack 5 for 7.1.4 if they determine that you need a fix or a debug module in order to proceed.

That said, I am still unclear about much of what you are saying. What I understand is this:
Your 7.1.4 event display is running a custom ruleset, and sometimes it fails to display an event which you would otherwise expect to be there. You open a new workspace with forwardall.rs and it's there. Your 7.1.3 system (running forwardall.rs?) has it too. Or is it running the custom ruleset? And at some point in time your original workspace recovers and seems to be back working all right.

Well, the first thing to say is that unless there's a lot more to this scenario than revealed so far, what happens on the 7.1.3 system is a red herring unless it also is running the custom ruleset and is otherwise a complete clone of the 7.1.4 system, because it has it's own OS-level, its own daemons, and those traps you see are generated locally by netmon on the 7.1.3 box, and do not originate somewhere else. It's a closed system, unless we are talking about vendor traps and not NetView ones like "Node Up" or "Node Down"

So let's try to narrow this down a bit. On your 7.1.4 system, this custom ruleset, what does it do? When you say events go missing, what do you mean exactly? That the forwardall.rs window shows, for example, "event1", event2", event3" but your custom window shows only "event1", "event3" while "event 2" is missing? Or does it hang for a period of time after "event1" and then eventually show you "event2" and "event3"?

Re: [NV-L] Intermittent Trap Loss in Control Desk

James,
No, these traps are not Log Only, they're all traps which are configured as Status Events. They're configured to be displayed in the Control Desk. For example "Node Down", "Node Up", etc. Yes it starts working again. The missing events are random.

As stated, the traps are in trapd.log, are configured in trapd.conf to be displayed, but are not in the Control Desk. There is a customized ruleset in place and it was created by our development team. I allows NetView and certain vendor traps to be displayed. When we want to review filtered out traps, we'll create a dynamic workspace and will specify "forwardall.rs" as the ruleset.

We have another server running NetView 7.1.3 and when the server running NetView 7.1.4 fails to display traps, we'll look back at the display from the 7.1.3 server and will see the trap. Last week a device went down and the server running 7.1.4 didn't display "Node Down" in the Control Desk. The server running 7.1.3 did have a "Node Down" event in its display.

The workaround I provided for our NOC is to have them create a 2nd events display with "forwardall.rs" specified as the ruleset. I'll also put together ac script for them to run to check the overall health of NetView.

You haven't told us much.

Do you mean the event window stops working or that some traps are missing? If just one, what about traps after that? Could this trap be defined as "Log Only" in trapd.conf? Are you using forwardall.rs as the ruleset in your Events Window? The lower right frame will tell you. And what about filters? When you pull down Options --> Show status are there any filters applied?

If the event window quits working, try running netstat -a and browse there result. Are there any backed up sockets, sockets where the send or receive queues are not zero? Are you running other rulesets in the background? Does your window ever start working again? What do your users do to recover?

Re: [NV-L] Intermittent Trap Loss in Control Desk

All,
The trap will end up in trapd.log but not displayed in the Control Desk.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this issue?

TIA,
