Proper syntax is DEFAULT_IP: : :U (i.e. spaces between the colons). This
will not unmanage anything already discovered, it will only cause new
devices to be unmanaged as they are discovered.

I tried your suggestion put the DEFAULT_IP:::U, but it doesn't seem to
unmanage no-responding snmp devices (ie workstations w/o snmp agent loaded).

Netview will only do status polling on the devices that you tell it to
manage; by default, that is everything it finds. There are several ways to
tell it to manage only the network devices:
1. Manually unmanage all the devices you don't care about (which is probably
not practical if you have a good sized network)
2. Use a seed file to limit discovery to only the network nodes (if you have
an ip address scheme that makes it feasible to identify these)
3. Have netview manage only those devices that respond to snmp. To do this,
modify the /usr/OV/conf/oid_to_type file and make the first line:
DEFAULT_IP: : :U
This will cause netview to automatically unmanage an device that doesn't
respond to snmp upon discovery (so you will have to delete all the pc's and
they will not be managed when they are rediscovered).
4. Have netview DISCOVER only those devices that respond to snmp. To do
this, modify the /usr/OV/conf/oid_to_type file and add the line:
DEFAULT_SNMP: : :U
This is risky, as you will never see devices if their snmp is not working
correctrly.
What's best? Personally, I use a combination of 2 & 3; I usually exclude
DHCP ranges in my seed file to eliminate the bulk of workstations, and only
manage devices that respond to snmp.

Whats the best way to check availability of devices on the network, but
limit the status polling to specific smart sets, SNMP POLLING OPTIONS maybe
?
For example I only want to check servers,routers,and hubs for up/down
status. I don't care about workstations. What's the best way to handle this.
