What Jason is explaining, is the fact that the SEA 1.0.3 snmpdx agent seems
to just stops answering snmpget request. We have been trying to determine
why the snmpdx agent stops responding after some period of time.
Snmpwalks to the "system" mib tree just stops responding, agent time out.
A "ps -ef" shows that the snmpdx agent and all its subagents are running.
We recycle the snmpdx with "/sbin/init.d/snmpdx stop" followed by a
"/sbin/init.d/snmpodx start" and every thing works again for a while. The
time it take the agent to stop answering get request changes, we have been
unable to fine the common cause of the agent failure. We are still looking
into it.
You will see the problem when starting the deamons for NetView, the netmon
deamon fails to start with a message that it could not verify that snmpd
was or is running. The ovstart or "/sbin/init.d/netnmrc" process takes a
"long" time to complete. If you do a "ps -ef" and grep for "sleep", and
see a "sleep 10", it must likely means that the NetView startup procedures
can not contact the snmpdx agent. Executing "/sbin/init.d/snmpdx stop"
followed by a "/sbin/init.d/snmpodx start" will start the netmon deamon, if
you time it right, (before NetView gives up trying to start agent or
contact agent).
If you have any idea on what could be causing the snmpdx agent to hang,
please pass them on.

Hmm - Ok allow me to rephrase my previous statement... the SNMP agent
portion of
1.0.2 seems to operate with NetView better than the SNMP agent in 1.0.3 - I
have
seen this DMI process problem and I recall my solution was to disable this
process from starting - so I guess I forgot that it was an issue
If you need to run DMI on this box, I guess 1.0.3 is the best option -
however,
if you only need the SNMP agent, disable DMI from starting and use 1.0.2 -
netmon seems to be a lot happier with this version of the agent - we are
investigating what the problem is with the SNMP agent in 1.0.3 - for now -
I
would still recommend 1.0.2
hope that helps!

Jason Kravitz,
You mentioned that SEA 1.0.2 was more stable and compliant with NetView. I
have had a problem where our CPU hitting 100 % and staying there. This has
happened multiple times and I have narrowed it down to the DMI process.
When I look at the release notes for 1.0.3
http://www.sun.com/solstice/products/ent.agents/docs/releasehtml/release
_not
es103.doc.html
<http://www.sun.com/solstice/products/ent.agents/docs/releasehtml/releas

tes103.doc.html>
it states
Bugs fixed in this release
4112330:
Desc: DMI service provider spins out of control consuming
100% of idle CPU when servicing a longer service request
It seems that we don't have much of a alternative but to go to 1.0.3 to
solve this problem. My testing is on an Ultra 1 Solaris 3.6 system. For
production we are planning on an SUN E450.
Please advise.
I captured some information below on vmstat.

When I stop the dmispd process it clears up the CPU problem.

I'd recommend using 1.0.2 - this seems to be the most stable and compliant
with
NetView

Subject: Solstice Enterprise Agents for NetView 5.1.1
I am installing NetView 5.1.1 on a Solaris 2.6 system. Is there a
recommendation or a requirement to utilize a specific version of the
Solstice Enterprise Agents in this environment? Currently version 1.0.1 is
running on the system. I have seen that version 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 are
available per the SUN website.
Thanks for your assistance.
