James, Leslie,

Thanks for your comments and I understand about levels of support, where fixes
are placed, etc.

The customer already has Netview 5.0 installed.

If I knew the move from 5.0 to 5.1 was smooth and easy I would not make a big
deal about
this. If the customer I am supporting was only using Netview it would not be
a big deal. However,
when you are asked to reinstall not only Netview, but NWAYS, RABM, MLM's,
Optivtity, and
SNA/Netview Service Point the upgrade scenario gets LONG. I don't think I can
reinstall
Netview without re-installing at least some of these other products.

The last time this customer upgraded (V4 to V5) they hired IBM Global Services
to do the upgrade.
The IBM GS person was qualified and knew what he was doing. It took him a week
to
get the system back up and functioning at the new levels of Netview and
associated software.

Now this customer is faced with a similar upgrade, and they are scared!!
Also, since the
move to Netview V5, they have gotten serious about traps and how they are
handled. All critical
events are processed on the Netview for AIX box, any event that cannot be
handled there is
forwarded to host Netview. This process is critical to their business and
they don't like to
have it down for more than eight hours in a month.

The customer would like the system to be down for no longer than 8 hours at a
time. I don't think
it is feasible to do this upgrade in eight hours.

Just letting off a little steam...

I would underscore Leslie remarks by pointing out that NetView Version 5.0 is
not supported in any usual sense of the term.
There are no fixes for it -- any problems that were reported on 5.0 were fixed
in 5.1 -- and if you do manage to install it, and you have a problem, Level 2
will do their best to advise you how to get around it, but they will not and
cannot take an APAR on a bug for us to fix. Only current code is fixed or
fixable. So there is little point in installing 5.0 at this date.

Gerry, why do you want to install 5.0 (I think Scott is saying 5.0 is
unsupported too)?
I would avoid it, since an awful lot of bugs have been fixed since then (two
years' worth!)
and nice new functions added. The current product is measurably more stable, if
you
ask me...

So, if I'm reading this correctly....

Netview 5.0 is supported, but the framework it runs on (3.2) is not supported.
If you
want to get to a supported framework (3.6), you must install Netview 5.1, which
is
a re-install and not an upgrade...

Is this true???

You will not be able to install NetView 5.0 on Framework 3.6. Only
NetView 5.1 and up will install on Framework 3.6. Without seeing the
logs I cannot be sure but this is probably the reason for your
installation failure.

NetView 5.0 will install on Framework 3.2 but is unsupported in any
case. As James said, the only course of action we can recommend is
upgrading to NetView 5.1.
