Dean -
I understand why if you have a working 5.1.1 system you might not go to 5.1.2
right away if you were worried about the
possibility of bad software upsetting your applecart. But we already know that
there are about 100 more bugs in 5.1.1 than
5.1.2 so if you are starting from scratch, as was true in this case, I don't
think it makes sense to use the old level. I
don't keep track of what they have saved in Level 2, but my guess is that any
user installing 5.1.1 for the first time will
be calling Level2 pretty quick for the netmon efixes that they published early
in 5.1.1's life. I seem to remeber a lot of
postings over that back in January. Are you not running any efixes now?

Subject: Re: DNS hostnames and Tivoli / Netview
There are some applications that do not support hostnames greater than 8
characters. NetView Distribution Manager comes to mind (at least some versions
of it), many mainframe apps. If you are not running an application that has this
restriction, you should be fine. If you are, then you should can use DNS to
support a 10 character hostname and an 8 character alias (for the legacy
appications). As NetView does a lot of reverse lookups, an 8 character hostname
and a 10 character alias would not work.
To answer James's question, I can think of a lot of reasons not to go to 5.1.2
so soon after shipping. There are many cases of bad software getting out there,
look at all the problems with the original 5.1.1 cd earlier this year. I should
say that this is endemic in the industry as a whole, not pointing fingers at
NetView. It could happen to anyone.
We are doing a new server install at the moment, and are planning to install the
5.1.2 patches later this afternoon. I think its a low risk move.

NetView has no problem -- my database contains many 10-character hostnames.
Don't know if Nways has a problem.
But why would anyone set up a new system with 5.1.1 when all the bugs found in
it are fixed in 5.1.2 and 5.1.2 is available
by order now?

Subject: DNS hostnames and Tivoli / Netview
Hi all,
I am setting up a Tivoli Netview system and want to have names displayed on
the maps for all the network devices.
I have heard there is an 8 character limit on hostname in the DNS when using
hostnames with certain legacy applications. I would like to use a hostname of 10
characters.
Does anybody know if using more than 8 would cause me a problem now or in the
future. The versions of software I will be running are below.
AIX 4.3.2
Framework 3.6.1
Netview 5.1.1
NWAYS 2.0
And possible will have RIM installed with latest DB2 version at a later date.
