Jane posted this one a while back and today I actually came across the
same problem, so I am posting the results just for for the record.

If you accidentally specify the same file for both traps and collection
data in the
configuration of the MLM, then you will end up with mixed data, and
smconvert will
choke on it with "smd (load): Unknown host: trap"

Subject: smconvert command

NetView 5.1.2, MLM-AIX.5.0.5.

I am trying to use smconvert to convert MLM collected data to
snmpCollect format. My command is simply
  smconvert /var/adm/smv2/collect/midmand.col
My understanding is that the default destination directory should
default to /usr/OV/databases/snmpCollect. I simply get the message:
  smd (load): Unknown host: trap
and no new data in my snmpCollect directory. I have tried running
mlmGraph on the same file and DO get output so it looks like there is
valid data in there.

Any suggestions? (I have checked that I can resolve the host names of
the 2 systems that data is being collected from).

Cheers,
Jane
