I'm revisiting a customer this week and I have found that about half of
their
nodes have 'REMOVED' versions of the nodes in the database. These
removed things have only a few fields, all normal ipmap fields. Nothing
makes them go away that can see. But this customer has really bad
name resolution, with interfaces that get added, deleted, added, and very
high object ids, and high sequence numbers attached to many of the
selection names (other than the normal ones for secondary addressing). I'm
putting it down to that, rediscoverying, and working on their name
resolution.
I hope they don't come back!

If on the other hand they have isSMAPPL and smDeleteObject fields set
to true, it might have something to do with Agent Policy Manager.
Before 5.1.2 there were some problems with orphaned objects left behind
when you deleted a node that had a policy set on it. With a rediscovery
they
would be gone, but I saw instructions to create a collection with
 "(isSMAPPL=TRUE) && (smDeleteObject=TRUE)" , and then delete the
objects found. You have to do this delete after putting 5.1.2 on.

Cordially,
