Remember that the NetView box is itself on the map and that the map is drawn
from his perspective, with him as the center.

If you move too far, then you have changed the topology and your map becomes
invalid, whether you like it or not. What happens is that your icons for boxes
which used to be in your local network become red and stay red because they
cannot be reached, if you now have to go through a router or something like
that. If that happens then you have to clear the databases (limited) and
re-discover, because that is the only way to rebuild your default map. That's
what we do here, and unless some other user has found magic we haven't, then you
will too, if this is what happens after you change the IP Address and do
reset_ci, and your immediate network neighborhood starts going red on the map.
The only way you can guarantee that this won't happen is to stay within the same
subnet.

Subject: [NV-L] Changing the IP address of Netview server

Hi guys,

I'm currently running a NV5.1.1 server on AIX and will be requiring an
IP address change on the Netview server, as it is needed to be moved from
one subnet to another.

The question is, apart from the steps required for Tivoli Framework
stuff, can I just run the reset_ci script when the IP address change
occurs? Reading a student's guide from Netview course, it stated that you
can only run reset_ci if you change IP address of your Netview server
within the same subnet, but if you require an IP address change to a
totally different subnet, you will have to clear your database and
re-discover? Is this true?

If this is the case, is there any other way that I can change the IP
address of my Netview server without having to rediscover as I don't want
to lose all my map customisations....ie. locations, etc.

Thanks and regards,
     Danny
