When root user starts a map, the nv6000 (or netview) script uses the awk
command on the output of the 'ps' command to do some checking on
processes that either are or are not running. It may be that your
particular
system, there are just too many processes running since awk has a limit.
Not only does it check on the background daemons, it also checks for
leftover processes from map users, and cleans those up. That's what
the collmap message is about. If the system is under a lot of stress, some
foreground processes might not have closed down properly. Or if you
closed a map inproperly, or if it crashed, you might get these processes
left over. The restart is trying to clean them up.
Then there is mention of registered daemons that are not running. I am not
familiar with the tecad_ipfm daemon. It is apparently configured to start
up
but fails to start. It would be some tivoli process, from the name of it,
but it
is not part of the basic Netview product. You can ignore it from a Netview
standpoint.
As for the floating location objects: if the ipmap application is not
running,
then location icons will be created as floaters. I suspect this is your
problem.
The ipmap process runs once per end user, and is configured to restart
itself
Try deleting the thing, closing the map, and reopening it. Create the
location
icon again, and while you are in that dialog, verify that ipmap is in the
list
of applications which you can configure capabilities. (You should also see
xxmap and general capabilities, or something like that, listed). If ipmap
is there,
then the icon you create should be flat, indicating that it is managed by
ipmap.
Call Support if you cannot keep ipmap running. Check the nettl log (see the
man page for nettl and netfmt commands) to error messages that go along
with this problem. I would expect to see ipmap bailout messages. Time to
call Support.
There is a known bug with location icons you created using the
location.conf
file. Those are created flat, but when you try to cut/paste into them, the
things
you move don't get moved, only copied, resulting in floaters. The bypass
for
this is to
close the map
ovstop netmon
ovtopofix -a
ovstart
before trying to use such a map. These are, by the way, your basic database
housekeeping steps, too.

Earlier I saw another error regarding awk and the number of fields. Could
this be related to another issue regarding creating locations and having
them
end up in the "user plane" with shadows? You cannot open them up as they
complain that they do not have a child submap. There are no other
locations
with the same names. This behavior started with the errors mentioned
above,
so I'm wondering if they are related?
Also, if this is related to any of the databases kept behind the scenes,
what
steps should I be taking to ensure the databases are in good shape?
