Well, Bob, you have to bring up xnmsnmpconf and tell NetView what the read
community name is since it has either been changed since installation or
else someone told NetView to use "public" as the read community name, when
in fact it is "pisgah". I think you will need to add a specific entry for
127.0.0.1 (the loopback address) and one for the primary IP address or
hostname of the NetView box as well.
NetView is an SNMP manager and you need to be careful about what the
correct community names are, not just for his box, but for those in the
rest of the network.
I would read about that in the User's Guide, the Admin Guide, and the help
for xnmsnmpconf before you continue playing.

the setup. here is a copy of my file:
logging file=/usr/tmp/snmpd.log enabled
logging size=0 level=0
# community public
# community private 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 readWrite
# community system 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 readWrite 1.17.2
community pisgah
community belaying 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 readWrite
view 1.17.2 system enterprises view
trap public 127.0.0.1 1.2.3 fe # loopback
#snmpd maxpacket=1024 querytimeout=120 smuxtimeout=60
smux 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.3.1.2.1.2 gated_password # gated
smux 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.3.1.2.2.1.1.2 dpid_password #dpid
smux 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.6.4.1 nv6000 # Tivoli NetView: trapgend
smux 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.6.4.6 nv6000 # Tivoli NetView: mgragentd
Issue now is what do I setup in the xnmsnmpconf.

Bob -
That should be "snmpd.conf". Sorry. Who installed and configured your
NetView? Is it brand new?

AIX? Solaris? NT? It helps if you tell us (a) what platform, (b) what
release, and (c) how you determied this to be the problem.
But basically you have to match the configuration for the read community
name for snmpd (see /etc/snmp.conf on AIX for example) with what occurs in
xnmsnmpconf.

Could anyone shed some light on why I get "Incorrect Community Name" for my
NetView servers?
