Yes, it is possible. It might work and it might not. It is not supported,
though. After the move, along with the other stuff you have to do
(mapadmin, reset_ci, etc), you would have to delete and rediscover
the two machines involved so they could be properly placed in the
map and recognized as the current netview server. Rather than plan
on doing it automatically every night I would consider doing it
manually every couple of weeks - that is, if you find that it works ok
in your environment.

On the subject of HACMP, a lot has been written about this. You can
search the archives of this listserver and find tons of good information.
It is not something I have any experience with, and appears to be a
big job.

Leslie,

You said:
"For porting your map from test to production: This will work if your two
machines are reasonably close in address (eg same subnet)."

What are the consequences if I try to port a map from one machine to an
other one in a completely different subnet ? Is this possible ?

And what if I move my server to an other location and change it's IP
address ?

I had some plan to try to port my database from one server to another
automatically every night for redundancy purpose. I don't want to have to
maintain the map twice because of the two servers and want my map to be
always up to date on my backup server.

Is this possible to do that ?

Also is HACMP a tested and recommended solution for fully redundant Netview
systems ?

(I am using AIX 4.3.3 and Netview 6.02)

Thanks,
Regards,

For porting your map from test to production: This will work if your two
machines
are reasonably close in address (eg same subnet). You will need to take
the whole database (/usr/OV/databases/openview) as well as the seedfile
and location.conf and the snmp configuration (read up on xnmsnmpconf =
-exp).
And any other customization you have done. Read about the backup and
restore of the database in the diag manual (I think). Use pax for the
restore.
And... /usr/OV/service/reset_ci after restoring to handle the change in
address
and name within the database. You will also need to run the mapadmin
command. Yes, practice would be a good idea.
