Hi,
One of the best working DNS is there where it is maintained by the
NetworkManagement stuff. They only monitor NetworkDevices and some Servers.
(only SNMP objects are monitored)
They use the sysname for the name - and own Domain-name (like .network).
They put in all interface to a router and resolv it the one name ! They
check if they get ip-addresses
in the event windows - and adding it afterwards (new discoverd or Agent
Trap). They manage that with a lot of handy scripts for getting all
interface and the sysname - so put it in a file
- and recycle the DNS - which is running locally on the netview box (aix
bind8). The gethostbyname function with /etc/hosts have been very slow if
the /etc/hosts file is getting bigger and bigger
so DNS was much more faster for lookups.... (daemon startup and sync time
have been much faster after DNS implementation).
This is one of "our" customers installation - where i haven't got any
Netview problems concerning name resolution.
Regards,
Dietmar

Subject: [nv-l] [Name Resolution] - Off Topic
What is the best way to handle name resolution for Network devices?
1. Do you use /etc/hosts ?
Do you have all router interfaces defined ?
Is the order of these interfaces important in your environment?
2. Do you use DNS ?
What platform do you use for DNS ? (AIX, Linux, Microsoft, etc)
Do you have reverse records for all router interfaces
Who maintains your DNS
What tools do you use to maintain it ?
Is your network equipment in different or the same zones as
workstations?
3. Do you use both / neither ?
I am in search of some "best practice" advise.
Thanks,
Don Davis
