Leslie,

ovtopfix is run every weekend, new node discovery has been turned off
several months ago since the initial discovery. There is no negative
address ranges in the seedfile since day1. When Network folks told me about
this problem I could not believe it. I did a search on the outputs of
ovobjprint and ovtopodump, but did not see any workstations in either one of
the output files at that time. What are the hints at V6? Are they some of
fields from "ovobjprint -f" I can refer to?

How does the pingList get built?

Thanks
Mei Chang

Well, it seems odd if you have new node discovery turned off, but I
suspect the problem is the oids in the seedfile. They have resulted in
hints in the database. Possibly you had not done an ovtopofix since
you turned off the discovery? Those hints, at V6, are checked every
so often to see if they have turned into something allowed by the
oids. You should be ok now, as the ovtopofix has removed the hints
and discovery is off so they should not come back. If you want to be
able to turn on discovery without pinging those addresses, you should
exclude them by using negative address ranges.

Cordially,

Hi,

Our Network Support is very sensitive to the ping traffic. Some of our
workstations were pinged by Netview last Friday. When they called me, I
turned on the netmon trace, and confirmed that netview was pinging some
workstations. I dumped the pingLists and the workstations' IP addresses
were there. I then stopped netmon, ran ovtopofix -a and ovmapcount -a ,
restart netmon, the pingList was accurate then.

Does anyone have answer for this? Does anyone know of any write-up
regarding pingList?

My Netview environment:

*            AIX 4.3.3, Netview 6.0.3

* New Node Discovery was off.

* netmon.seed contains Network Device sysNames, Cisco and Nortel
Vendor Object IDs, and sets of HSRP Add Network folks
provided. NO IP ADDRESS RANGE was used on netmon.seed.

Thanks in advance.

Mei Chang
