Andrea,
If the people owning the routers and DNS will not allow you to change the
hostnames for the interfaces so that they resolve to the same name then you
may only have one solution. That is to put those names and addresses in
your own /etc/hosts file on your NetView server. You probably don't have
to put all 4 addresses there. It sounds like just the 4th interface my
have a new hostname resolution. If so, that would be the interface to
put in your /etc/hosts so that it resolves a name to match the other 3
interfaces.
You also want to make sure your box is reading your /etc/hosts first, then
going to DNS so it picks up your changes. Under AIX and Solaris there are
different ways to make that happen.
Try that with one router, delete the "duplicate router" , then demandpoll
the original symbol. At that time it should discover the 4th interface
and add it to the router symbol.

reverse lookups) to the same fully qualified name?

I can't resolve all 4 interfaces to the same hostname. I edited the
seedfile to only discover the ethernet interfaces and exclude the other
interfaces but Netview still discovers the same identical device twice,
once on the ip map and once in the new objects list. The router on the map
looks correct, if I could just eliminate the rediscovery of the item in the
"New Object Holding Area." Any ideas??

Did those new interfaces have a separate name in the DNS? Did the new
routers reflect that new name? Would it be possible to resolve all 4
interfaces to the same hostname? Try that with one router and rediscover
it. It should fix the problem.

All,
We currently have 630 routers in our environment. All have been
discovered on our main IP map. Each router had 3 interfaces. Back several
months ago our communications team added another interface to each router
bringing the total to 4. The new interface was automatically added to the
router icon on the map, however, it created a new object in "New Object
Holding Area." The devices seem to be identical. If I delete one or both,
they are rediscovered in the same fashion. My temporary fix was to hide the
routers that were discovered in the "New Object Holding Area." This seems
to be working for now but I would like to fix this issue the correct way.
Any suggestions????
