Anil,

I really don't know why netmon is deleting the interface (and finally the
node because it has no more interface) from X335-10.
I would assume that with "NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=TRUE" netmon only
reports the duplicate IP address
and leave it as it is (10.135.16.116 on X335-10).
You should contact support and open a PMR so that this can be investigated.

For your second question:
You have probably to restart netmon in order to be able to rediscover
X335-10 because X335-10 is still in netmon's cache (as already discovered
node).

Kind regards

Hi Oliver,

I am sorry for not getting back earlier.
I had to go out of office for a few days.

What I want is that duplicate IP id detected and the
Symbol of duplicated IP node is not removed from the map.
So, I set NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=TRUE
And
NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=TRUE

This is confirmed by seeing these variables to be
Set in netmon.trace when netmon -a 160 command is issued.

To begin with, I have a host e220-30 & x335-10
Both have two different IP addresses. I can see both
In the netview map and locate them using Locate->Object Name->
By Selection Name..

Now, I add another interface hme0:1 on e220-30 & assign x335-10's
IP (10.135.16.116) to it. So, e220-30 now has two interfaces.

Now, I run Test->demand poll on e220-30. Netview can detect
The duplicate IP.
I get following events almost at the same time in this order -

e220-30 Duplicate IP Address 10.135.16.116 on e220-30 and x335-10
X335-10 Node Managed
X335-10 Interface 10.135.16.116 deleted
X335-10 Node deleted
E220-30 interface hme0:1 added

Now, if I try to locate x335-10, netview says "no such symbol"

Further now, I deleted the hme0:1 with duplicate IP interface
At e220-30 using ifconfig command. Now, I run demand poll on e220-30.

I see an event generated
E220-30 Interface hme0:1 deleted.
But Still, I do not see x335-10 symbol.

My question is how do I avoid deletion of x335-10 here?
And further, How do I get X335-10 symbol back, if it get deleted.

Thanks for all the help, you have been providing.

Anil,

sorry, but I have some problems to understand your second paragraph. Before
setting the env var "NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=TRUE" there was a node
deleted due to a duplicate IP address. Right? Now you have corrected the
duplicate IP Address and want to discover the node again. Again right? Is
this a node with more than one interfaces? What IP address is in the
seedfile (if any)? The duplicate IP addess? The new corrected duplicate IP
address? Or the IP address from another interface?

Kind regards

Oliver,

Thanks for providing all the details.
I set the variables using netmon.conf and checked using
Netmon -a 160. It did not add the env.
But when added these environment variables using /usr/OV/bin/netnmrc.pre, I
see the env added. Now, I am getting duplicate IP event.

But, I earlier defined NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=TRUE.
As a result, Netview deleted the duplicate IP node from the Map. How do I
initiate discovery at my will to get the Deleted symbol back. I have
already
rectified the duplicated IP.

Thanks,

Anil

both environment variables nothing have to do with each other.

-----------
DCF Document ID: 1063371 - IBM Tivoli NetView: Definition of
NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT Problem Desc: A more concise description
is needed of the environmental variable NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT
found in "/usr/OV/conf/netmon.conf"?

Solution: The environmental variable "NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT"
allows netmon to either generate a duplicate address events whenever a
duplicate address is encountered in the network or to not generate the
event.

NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=TRUE, will generate a duplicate address
event as in v5. NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=FALSE will surpress the
duplicate address event.

-----------
DCF Document ID: 1063439 - IBM Tivoli NetView: Improved "netmon.conf"
definition of NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY Problem Desc: A more concise
description is needed of the environmental
variable: NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY, found in
"/usr/OV/conf/netmon.conf".

Solution: When netmon encounters a duplicate address in a network, it
moves
the interface to the "last seen" node. This may cause an interface to
"float" from node to node. Setting the parameter to TRUE will cause netmon
to only produce a trace message. The interface will remain on the node
where
it was first discovered.

NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=FALSE
Set to FALSE to report duplicate IP addresses and remove them.

NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=TRUE
Set to TRUE to report duplicate IP addresses but will not remove them.
-----------

You have to restart netmon after making the changes to netmon.conf.

You can dump netmons environment variables to /usr/OV/log/netmon.trace with
"netmon -a 160".

Hope this helps.

Oliver,

Thanks for a quick response.
Yes, I removed the # in front.

Also, I see another entry.
# Set to TRUE to report duplicate IP addresses, don't remove them.
#NV_NETMON_REPORT_DUP_ADDRS_ONLY=FALSE

I also tried setting this keyword to TRUE (and removing leading #) along
with NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=TRUE

Still, I do not see Duplicate IP event.

(Though, I am not sure what these keyword do together or separately. I
searched all online docs of Netview for rev 7.1, 7.11 and 7.12. But search
could not find any reference to these keywords in any of these docs.).

Please suggest, if I can check out some other settings or enable some Kind
of trace of netmon which may suggest if it is getting right environment
etc.

Sincerely,
-- Anil Kumar

Hello Anil,

did you also remove the hash (#) in front of
NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=TRUE
?

HI Oliver,

I saw your your posting relating to detecting duplicate IP with Netview
7.1.2 :

>unfortunately on NetView 6 no more duplicate ip address traps are
generated
>as it was on NetView 5.
>On NetView 7.1 this feature can be reenabled by setting the following
>netmon option in /usr/OV/conf/netmon.conf
>-----
># Set to TRUE to generate a duplicate event as in v5
>NV_NETMON_GENERATE_DUP_ADDR_EVENT=TRUE

I AM USING NETVIEW 7.1.2 and did what you suggested and than restarted
all
netview deamons. I than assigned an IP of the exiting node to an interface
of an another existing node.

I see events such as "link address is different than earlier". But I do not
see duplicate IP events. Am I missing some step?

Thanks in adavance for any help.

Thanks
